The Art of Copperplate:

Progressive Skills Workshop

Elegant Beginnings:

Introduction to Copperplate Oct 27 and 28

Copperplate calligraphy is timelessly elegant.

This two-day workshop is for students new to Copperplate, as well as those seeking an intensive review.

Beginning with the basics, introducing the flexible pointed pen and the magic you can create.

A step-by-step approach, we will learn the fundamentals of Copperplate – the basic strokes, minuscules, capitals and numbers – as well as devoting time to spacing and letter connections.

Emphasis will be placed on mastering the pen, focusing on consistency of pressure, as well as the shapes of the letters and their relationships, to develop a deep understanding of this elegant and ever-popular script.

The class will proceed slowly, giving beginners ample time to grasp the principles of Copperplate and practice the letterforms, as well as enabling more advanced students to improve their skills in order to write an elegant, graceful hand.

A small class with only room for around 20 people.

For students familiar with the basics of Copperplate, this class explores further possibilities: variations on minuscule and capital letters, as well as letter size and proportions.

The class will also be introduced to the basic principles, shapes and techniques of flourishing, through a series of pencil exercises and simple drawing techniques, as well as by studying examples from the 18th century English writing masters in The Universal Penman and other historical sources.

Some experience with Copperplate is essential, although advanced beginners are welcome.

Due to time limitations, we can’t promise to review the material covered in our Introduction to Copperplate class (immediately preceding this one), so we recommend that class for beginners interested in the more advanced material we will be covering in Intermediate Copperplate.
