Elevating Your Script: Intermediate Spencerian Mastery

This intermediate class on Spencerian Script is tailored for calligraphers with a foundational understanding of the style.

While prior knowledge of minuscules and majuscules is recommended and we suggest completing our introductory class first.

In this class, we will explore ligatures in detail, helping you refine letter connections and spacing while developing a consistent writing rhythm.

Students will also learn about abbreviations, variations, and flourishing techniques for both lowercase and uppercase letters.

By the end of this two-day workshop, participants will have a solid grasp of Spencerian Script and will create a beautiful piece of artwork featuring their favorite poem or quotation.

Kalo Chu - Art of Spencerian Calligraphy

Kalo Chu

Kalo Chu specialises in Spencerian and Engrosser's Script.

Based in Hong Kong, Kalo founded "Kalo Make Art" in 2011, sharing her passion for calligraphy and penmanship with over 6,000 students.

Kalo has refined her Spencerian skills under the guidance of renowned Master Penmen, including Michael Sull and Harvest Crittenden.

Her dedication is highlighted by her recent achievement of the Certificate of Excellence in both Spencerian and Engrosser’s Script from IAMPETH.

She teaches internationally including at the IAMPETH conference in 2024 and 2025, and the New York Society of Scribes in 2024 and 2025 and workshops in China and UK.

Her fascination with Medieval illuminated manuscripts began during her university studies in European Art History.

In 2023, Kalo studied original pieces during the Illumination Saga in Michigan.

In 2024, she was commissioned to create a manuscript for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, which is now proudly displayed in the Royal Family’s residence.

In 2025, Kalo received a prestigious invitation to design the President’s Certificate as a gift for the president of IAMPETH, which is her largest artistic creation to date.

Outside of calligraphy, Kalo enjoys lindy hop swing dancing, which mirrors the rhythm and fluidity in her work. She is committed inspiring others to appreciate the art of handwriting.
